We have stayed in Airbnb properties all over the world. We stayed in an apartment in Verona, Italy just around the corner from the best coffee shop in the world. We stayed in a house in Mittenwald, Germany with outlooks to the Alps. We have stayed in Penang, Malaysia swimming high in a rooftop pool overlooking the city. We have stayed in London looking out the window towards the Thames.
Staying in an Airbnb as a family allows us to live like locals, engage with the community and have all the space an amenities that we need to make our holiday adventure smooth running.
Using Airbnb is so easy and a great way for all families to enjoy a weekend away together and for our family of 5 to negate the cost of two hotel rooms.
We were thrilled to work together with Airbnb to experience a property closer to home on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria.
The Mornington Peninsula
The Mornington Peninsula is an area of Victoria around an hours drive south from the city of Melbourne. The Peninsula is the place where the amazing Port Phillip bay beaches run for kilometres meeting the bush area of Red Hill and Main Ridge all the way over to the back beaches of Westernport Bay and Bass strait.
Research is one of my favourite parts of new adventures. I love looking through all the amazing properties on Airbnb to help choose a destination. Once we have decided on our destination we pop in some dates and narrow our list down to about 5 properties.
It is really important to remember that all Airbnbs will be different and it’s not like staying at a hotel. They are peoples homes and communication is key so both parties know what to expect.
I like to email the owners/managers of the property and ask a few questions just to get a feel for the type of person they are. Travelling with kids, you want someone that is warm and flexible and welcoming of families. I also like to tell the host a little bit about us and make the whole experience a little more personable.
We are very easy going and are happy to just unlock a property ourselves and start our holiday. Some people might like to meet the host and have them show you around the property. Flexibility is key and there is no such thing as a silly question!
Make sure you ask about transport and ease of access to train stations. If you have a car ask about off street parking availability.
We also like to ask and familiarise ourselves with locations of local hospitals or clinics just incase.
You can stay at an Airbnb for a 1 night or 6 months. Hosts are usually open to discussions about discounts with longer term bookings so don’t be afraid to discuss.
We then usually have a clear winner and book!
Our Airbnb house was located in the suburb of Mt Martha. Set high on the cliff top it had the most amazing view of the Peninsula towards Dromana and Rosebud and out across towards Arthurs Seat.
The house could cater for 7 people with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Architecturally it was really different which really drew me to it as it’s so different to our own home.
There are literally hundreds of experiences to enjoy in the area and it’s perfect for families.
Our children are aged 12,8,5 and our favourite experiences include:
The Peninsula Hot springs
Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm.
Bushwalking in the Briars
Enchanted Maze Garden.
Without a doubt food is a huge highlight of traveling. Airbnb allows you to self cater if your home has a kitchen. My kids love hitting the local grocery shop to see which new foods they can try. With kids this is essential for us as it saves us dragging them out to late or early to eat. Along with cooking ourselves we also love using Apps like Menulog to find local restaurants who deliver to the house.
