Surfs up!

Surfs up!
Spread the love

If you have ever wanted to volunteer, I have found the perfect place.

Sunshine, beach, water, surf, fun, and witnessing the best smiles ever!

On Saturday we attended our first Disabled Surfing Assocation event held at Point Leo Surf beach.

Lets just say this organisation and all who are involved are amazing. We had the greatest time. Cooper had an even better time.

We registered at 9am and paid $10 to participate for the day.

Cooper was given a rash vest to identify him and a wrist band with his name and a “no float” message for safety. Andrew got a grey rashie as his carer.

He was transfered from his manual chair into the big beach wheel chair that are at surf beaches across the peninsula available for loan.

Cooper had a team of supporters to assist him onto the beach. Safety standards were amazing.

On the beach morning tea was provided by way of fresh fruit and water while the surfers waited their turn for a surf. There were 74 surfers and 200 volunteers. Coop surfed at around 10:30am.

He loved it. He is hooked! He loved all the support and cheers he received from the amazing voluneteers.

He had some turns on his tummy and some on his knees. He loved the speed and doing it himself!

Volunteers ranged in age and gender and were so enthusiastic the whole morning! Participants had varying disabilities and ranged from Coopers age and up! They had 14 beach wheelchairs that were well used and some people even had their own!

We would like to thank everyone who was involved in this great day. It would have been a massive undertaking and as participants we truly admire your attitudes and enthusiasm shown to Cooper and our family and all the participants.

Thankyou to Coopers speechie for telling us about it and also to Andrews godmother Anne who volunteers on the committee.

We enjoyed a sausage sizzle for lunch too!

We were also lucky enough to share this day with new friends who I had only known online but now do in real life! Thanks to John for taking Cooper out for extra surfs and to Kate for chatting travel with me! Thrilled to finally meet your beautiful family.

Now Cooper has us searching gumtree for second hand surfboards!……
